A parent's guide to the first consultation call

The first call is often the hardest one to make — mostly because parents aren't sure what to expect. Here's what actually happens.
Before the call
You don't need a diagnosis, a formal report, or a fully formed question. Just a sense of what you're noticing or what's prompted you to reach out is enough.
During the call
Expect open questions about your child, your family's routine, and what's already been tried — not a sales pitch. A good consultation feels more like being listened to than being sold to.
What you should walk away with
A realistic sense of next steps — whether that's an assessment, a specific therapy referral, or simply more time to observe — and a clear understanding of what it would cost and involve.
No pressure, genuinely
You're not committing to anything by having the conversation. If the honest answer is "let's wait and see," a good clinical lead will tell you that rather than recommend a plan you don't need.
