ABA, in plain words
What ABA therapy is, and what it isn't.
Applied Behaviour Analysis is a way of teaching that starts from what your child can already do and builds from there in small, measured steps. A skill — asking for a drink, waiting for a turn, getting dressed, coping when the plan changes — is broken down, taught, practised where it is needed and recorded, so everyone can see whether it is actually being learned.
Good ABA today is not the hours-at-a-table drilling many parents have read about. A well-run programme is built around your child's interests, uses play and the ordinary routines of the day as its teaching moments, and pays attention to whether your child is comfortable and willing. If a programme you are offered looks like compliance training, ask why.
In Dubai, ABA is offered by clinics, centres, school teams and freelance therapists. We run it as a BCBA/RBT team that comes to your child — at home, at school, or both — so skills are taught in the places they have to work.

What a programme covers
Goals your family actually cares about.
Communication
Asking for things, saying no, getting someone's attention, answering a question — with words, signs, pictures or a device, whichever your child can use today.
Daily living
Dressing, toileting, brushing teeth, eating a wider range of food and getting through a bedtime routine, taught towards doing it alone.
Behaviour that gets in the way
Working out why it happens first — what it gets your child, or what it gets them out of — then teaching something that works better for them.
Play and social skills
Taking turns, sharing attention, copying, playing alongside a sibling or a classmate rather than only beside them.
Ready for the classroom
Sitting for a short group activity, following an instruction given to the whole class, and moving between activities without a crisis.
Coaching for you
You are shown the same strategies the therapist uses, so the progress keeps happening on the days and hours nobody is booked.
Why a team, not one therapist
Supervised, not freelance.
A BCBA writes the programme
From your brief and an observation of your child — not a pack of targets every child is given.
An RBT delivers it consistently
The same person, working the same way, with each session recorded. Consistency is most of what makes ABA work.
The data decides what changes
Targets that are mastered are replaced and targets that stall are rewritten. You see the review every month.
Someone answers for it
If the fit between your child and the therapist is wrong, we replace the therapist. You are never left managing it alone.
How it starts
From a first message to the first session.
- Step 1
Tell us about your child
On WhatsApp, by phone, or in the free intake form — age, what you are seeing, and the hours your family can sustain.
- Step 2
A BCBA reviews the brief
AED 499 opens the search. The BCBA sets the first goals and recommends the weekly hours and the setting.
- Step 3
Meet your RBT
We introduce one matched therapist, not a list, and the first session takes place where your child will be working.
- Step 4
Sessions, data, review
Billed per session from AED 325 an hour, with data taken every session and the programme reviewed with you monthly.
Pricing
Two figures, both up front.

Questions families ask.
- How much does ABA therapy cost in Dubai?
- With Special Minds, sessions start from AED 325 an hour, and AED 499 opens the search. The hourly rate depends on your child's programme and eases as the weekly hours go up; it is confirmed in writing before the first session. Across Dubai, published rates vary widely, so compare what is included — supervision, data and replacement — and not only the number.
- Is ABA only for autistic children?
- It is most often used with autistic children, but the same methods help children with global developmental delay, Down syndrome, intellectual disability and ADHD-related behaviour, and with specific problems such as toileting, sleep, feeding or aggression. The BCBA decides whether ABA is the right tool before anything is booked.
- What age is ABA for?
- There is no upper age. Early intervention, usually between two and six, is where the most hours are typically recommended, because so much is being learned at once. School-age children and teenagers work on different goals — independence, social skills, managing school — with fewer hours.
- How many hours a week will my child need?
- The BCBA recommends a number after reviewing the brief and observing your child; you decide what your family can sustain. Home programmes commonly run two to three sessions a week of one to two hours, and intensive early intervention runs more. A well-written programme matters more than the raw number of hours.
- Do you run an ABA centre in Dubai?
- Our ABA sessions take place in your home or at your child's nursery or school, because those are the places a skill has to work. If a centre setting matters to you, tell us and we will say plainly whether we are the right fit.
- Does insurance cover ABA in the UAE?
- Some UAE policies reimburse ABA on a pay-and-claim basis, usually within an annual limit. We invoice monthly with the detail an insurer asks for, but we cannot confirm cover on your behalf — check your policy before you register.
- What is the difference between a BCBA and an RBT?
- A BCBA is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst: a graduate-level clinician who assesses, writes the programme and supervises it. An RBT is a Registered Behavior Technician: trained to deliver the programme session by session, working under that supervision.
- Does my child need a diagnosis before starting ABA?
- Not to talk to us. If a formal picture would help the programme, we say so before you pay anything — and our standalone assessment (AED 499) is there for families who want one first.
- Can ABA happen at my child's school?
- Yes, with the school's agreement. We coordinate with the SENCO or inclusion lead directly, so the therapist's work fits the classroom rather than competing with it.
