Signs your inclusion team needs more coverage before it becomes a crisis

Coverage gaps rarely announce themselves in advance. Here are the earlier, quieter signals worth watching before a gap turns into a mid-term scramble.

One specialist covering what should be two roles

If an LSA is being stretched across students or classes beyond their original brief "just for now," that's usually already overdue for a conversation, not a warning sign for later.

No bench when someone is unavailable

Sick leave, visa runs, resignations — they all happen. The real question is whether your staffing partner has vetted specialists ready to step in, or whether a single absence becomes your problem to solve.

Reviews happening less often than placements need

If check-ins have quietly become "as needed" rather than scheduled, that's often a sign capacity is already tight — reviewing progress is usually the first thing that slips when a team is stretched.

New enrolments outpacing staffing conversations

If SEN enrolments are growing and your staffing plan hasn't been revisited this term, it's worth getting ahead of it rather than reacting once a specific child is left without support.

Getting ahead of it

None of this needs to be solved alone. Our schools & centres page covers how we structure coverage so a single absence doesn't become a term-long gap — or book a consultation to talk through where you're currently stretched.
