How to talk to your child's school about an SEN diagnosis

A new diagnosis can feel like a lot to bring to a school meeting — here's a practical way to approach that first conversation.

Bring the assessment, not just the label

A diagnosis on its own tells a school less than the full assessment report, which usually contains specific, actionable recommendations. Share what you have.

Ask what the school can offer before assuming

KHDA-regulated schools in Dubai are required to have inclusion provisions, but capacity varies. Ask directly what's available — an LSA, adjusted assessments, a learning support register — before assuming a gap needs to be filled privately.

Request a written plan

Verbal reassurance is easy to give and easy to forget. Ask for a written accommodation or support plan you can refer back to, ideally with a review date.

Keep the relationship collaborative

Schools respond better to partnership than to demands, even when you're advocating firmly. Regular, calm check-ins tend to get better long-term results than only escalating when something goes wrong.

If you need outside support alongside the school's provision, our families page covers how we work alongside your child's existing school.
