What an IEP actually is — and how it works in a KHDA-regulated Dubai school

IEP comes up early in most conversations about school support, but what it actually involves in practice is often left vague. Here's how it tends to work in a KHDA-regulated Dubai school.
What an IEP actually is
An Individual Education Plan (IEP) is a written document that sets out a child's specific learning goals, the support and accommodations they'll receive, and how progress will be tracked. It isn't a diagnosis and it isn't a punishment — it's a working plan a school's inclusion team builds around a specific child.
Who's involved in building one
In a KHDA-regulated Dubai school, an IEP is typically developed by the school's inclusion or SEN team in consultation with parents, the child's teachers, and any external therapists or specialists already involved. KHDA's inclusive education framework expects schools to run this kind of collaborative process, rather than leaving it to one teacher's judgement.
What actually goes into it
A typical IEP sets out specific, measurable goals for a defined period, the accommodations or modifications a child receives in class and during assessments, and who is responsible for delivering each part. It's reviewed and updated on a regular cycle — not written once and filed away.
How it plays out day to day
In practice, an IEP shapes small daily decisions — extra time on a task, a modified worksheet, seating near the front, or one-to-one support from an LSA during certain lessons. The document matters less than whether the people around the child actually know it and use it consistently.
Getting the most out of one
As a parent, it helps to ask specifically what the goals are, how progress will be measured, and when the next review is scheduled, rather than just confirming a plan exists. An IEP works best as a live, ongoing conversation between school and home, not a folder filed away after the first meeting.
