What clinical supervision actually means (and why it matters)

"Clinically supervised" can sound like marketing language until you understand what it actually changes about a placement.

What it isn't

It doesn't mean a specialist is watched constantly, or that every session is directly observed. Supervision is about accountability and review, not surveillance.

What it actually looks like

A named clinical lead reviews each placement's progress against documented goals on a regular schedule, is reachable if something isn't working, and has the authority to adjust the plan — not just note the issue.

Why unsupervised placement is riskier than it sounds

A freelance LSA or therapist with no clinical oversight has no one checking whether their approach is actually working, or catching it early if a placement starts to go wrong.

What to ask any provider

Ask specifically who supervises a placement, how often progress is reviewed, and what happens if a family raises a concern. Vague answers here are worth taking seriously.
