When should a child see a developmental paediatrician? A parent's guide

If your child has more than one area of concern — say, speech that's behind alongside some motor or social differences — a single specialist may not be the right starting point. A developmental paediatrician is trained to look across all these areas at once, which is often exactly what's needed when the picture isn't simple.

What a developmental paediatrician actually does

Unlike a specialist focused on one system — an ENT for hearing, a neurologist for seizures — a developmental paediatrician's whole focus is how a child is developing across motor, speech and language, social, and cognitive domains together. They take a full developmental history, often review reports from any therapists already involved, and can make or confirm a formal diagnosis where one is needed.

When a referral makes sense

It's worth asking your GP or paediatrician for a referral when your child shows delays in more than one area at once, when the picture is unclear or doesn't fit neatly into a single category, when a school or nursery needs a formal diagnosis to put support in place, or when you're considering medication — for ADHD, for example — and need a specialist to guide that decision.

You don't have to wait to start support

Developmental paediatrician appointments in the UAE can have genuine waiting lists, and that wait shouldn't be wasted time. Speech therapy, occupational therapy, ABA, or parent coaching can typically start in parallel with, or even before, a formal diagnosis, based on the concerns you're already seeing day to day. A diagnosis can shape and confirm a support plan, but it isn't usually a prerequisite for starting one.

What to bring to the appointment

The same as with any specialist: a clear timeline of when you first noticed concerns, any nursery or school observations, and reports from therapists already involved. The more concrete detail you can offer, the less the appointment relies on a single snapshot of a single day.
