It varies widely in how it shows up and how much support a child needs, which is exactly why we start with an individual assessment rather than a label.
- Do you diagnose intellectual disability?
- No — formal diagnosis involves cognitive and adaptive-skills testing carried out by a psychologist. We can point you toward assessment partners and support your child with therapy and school coordination in parallel.
- What is the 'People of Determination' status, and does my child qualify?
- It's the UAE's official term for people with disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, and it can open access to certain benefits and services through the Ministry of Community Empowerment. We can talk you through what we know, though the application itself goes through the relevant government channels.
- Will my child be able to attend a mainstream school?
- It depends on your child's needs and the school's support model. In Dubai, KHDA inspection ratings are one useful public indicator of a school's inclusion support, though not the only one — some schools specialise in one condition, some are inclusive mainstream schools with dedicated support services, and some mainstream schools offer accommodations without a dedicated programme. Fees at schools with strong inclusion support commonly range from around AED 30,000 to 150,000 a year, before therapy costs, so it's worth planning for that alongside choosing the right fit.
