Autism, and what therapy is for
Supporting your child, not changing who they are.
Autism is not an illness, and therapy is not about making your child less autistic. Autistic children communicate, learn and experience the world differently, and good therapy starts from respect for that. What it can do is teach the skills that make everyday life easier for your child and your family — being understood, coping with change, getting dressed, joining in — at a pace your child can manage.
Your child may need more than one kind of help, and the mix often changes as they grow. ABA works on communication, daily routines and behaviour that gets in the way, through a programme a BCBA writes and an RBT delivers. Speech and language therapy builds understanding and expression. Occupational therapy works on sensory needs, motor skills and self-care. We arrange all three through one clinical team, so the goals can be planned together.
If you searched for autism treatment or an autism therapy centre in Dubai, you will have seen a wide range of options. Our therapists come to your child — at home, at school or both — because that is where the skills have to work. For everything else we do for autistic children, including classroom support, see our autism support page.

Three therapies, one plan
What each therapy brings.
ABA
A BCBA writes a programme for communication, daily living, play and behaviour, and an RBT delivers it one-to-one with data every session.
Speech and language therapy
Understanding what is said, expressing needs and ideas, and using language with other people — in words, signs, pictures or a device.
Occupational therapy
Sensory needs, fine and gross motor skills, and self-care such as dressing and eating: often the things that make a busy day overwhelming.
Communication without speech
For children who speak little or not at all, AAC such as pictures, PECS or a speech device is taught as a real way to communicate, not a last resort.
Coaching for the family
You are shown how to use the same strategies in daily life, because the hours with a therapist are a small part of your child's week.
Intensive therapy
How many hours, and who decides.
The BCBA recommends
After reviewing your child's brief, the BCBA recommends weekly ABA hours and a setting. At home, that is commonly two to three sessions a week of one to two hours.
Intensive early intervention
For young children the BCBA may recommend more. The right number is the one your child can learn from and your family can keep up.
Your family decides
The recommendation is a starting point. You choose what to book, and the hours can be looked at again at the monthly review.
A week that fits
If your child also has speech or occupational therapy, the ABA hours are planned around it so a young child is not over-scheduled.
Pricing
Two figures, both up front.

Questions families ask.
- Which therapy does an autistic child need?
- It depends on the child. ABA is often recommended for communication, daily living and behaviour; speech and language therapy for understanding and expression; and occupational therapy for sensory and motor needs. A combination is common, and our assessment or the BCBA's review of your brief tells you where to start.
- Is autism therapy a treatment for autism?
- Not in the medical sense. Autism is a lifelong difference in how a person communicates and experiences the world, not a disease. Therapy builds skills and eases the things that make daily life hard for your child, so be cautious of anyone who promises a cure or a recovery.
- Do you have an autism therapy centre in Dubai?
- No, we do not run a centre. Our therapists come to your home or to your child's nursery or school, because those are the places skills have to work. If a centre is what you need, we will tell you honestly whether we are the right fit.
- What does intensive autism therapy involve?
- Intensive therapy usually means a higher number of ABA hours a week, most often for young children in early intervention. The BCBA recommends the hours after reviewing your child's brief, and you decide what your family can sustain. Hours only help if the programme behind them is well written and regularly reviewed.
- Does my child need an autism diagnosis to start therapy?
- No diagnosis is needed to talk to us, and if a formal picture would help, we say so before you pay anything. Our standalone assessment (AED 499) with the Education and Program Director is behavioural and educational, not a medical diagnosis. A diagnosis of autism is made by a developmental paediatrician or a similar specialist.
- How much does autism therapy cost in Dubai?
- ABA sessions with Special Minds start from AED 325 an hour, with AED 499 to open the search, and the rate eases as weekly hours rise. Speech and occupational therapy rates are confirmed for your child's plan before sessions begin. Some UAE policies reimburse ABA on a pay-and-claim basis within an annual limit, but we cannot confirm cover for you.
- Is ABA right for every autistic child?
- Not automatically. A BCBA reviews your child's brief before anything is booked and tells you whether ABA is the right tool, or whether another therapy should come first. Good ABA should also feel right to your child: play-based, built on their interests and attentive to whether they are comfortable.
- How is ABA different from DIR/Floortime?
- Both are used with autistic children. DIR/Floortime follows the child's lead in play to build relationships and emotional development, while ABA teaches specific skills in measured steps, and modern ABA also uses play and the child's interests. Which suits your child depends on their goals and how they learn.
- Can therapy support my autistic child at school too?
- Yes. ABA sessions can run at nursery or school with the school's agreement, coordinated with the SENCO. If your child needs support through the whole school day, a shadow teacher or LSA may be the better fit, and we provide those too.
